Brother, I’m impressed!

My Brother HE-240 finally arrived via UPS from Costco at 7:00 this evening!

Brother HE-240 Embroidery Machine

It came with everything as advertised on the American Home Shopping Network including the uber important USB port! I had it unpacked and embroidering in less than 1/2 an hour, granted I had read the online manual and watched various YouTube videos so I felt I really knew this machine before it arrived. Keep in mind that I have never machine embroidered anything in my life, I’ve never even tried a machine in the store simply because they’ve been out of my price range.

The Brother HE-240 feels solid and reminded me a lot of my Babylock Crafter’s Choice, further, it’s super quiet! It was very easy to slide the embroidery unit into place and simple to snap the embroidery hoop on. I really don’t know how tight to make the hoop as I’ve never hooped anything in my life and I’m afraid of breaking it.

My first machine embroidery

I’m impressed with the embroidery quality, I’m sure it’s not as perfect as the Babylock Ellisimo or Brother Quattro (drool!) but it’s darn good for the price of the machine! It comes loaded with 70 embroidery designs which includes monograms (sample above) as well as 5 fonts. Many of the designs are not to my taste but I’ve perused many designs available online at reasonable prices, many free. Tomorrow I’m going to attempt to download a few designs, I’ve heard they sew out much nicer than the built-in designs.

I can tell I’m going to blow through a lot of stabilizer! I’m still researching, it’s relatively inexpensive on Ebay and I think — but am not sure — that the water soluble type is the way to go. I’m also going to go through a lot of thread!

  1. Hello,
I was thinking about getting this machine from Costco or the Elna 5300 from TSC. Right now Costco has the Brother on sale and wondered if it came with any accessories as there were no indication but you have confirmed it does. Yeah! Both machines would be over kill for my use as I would be using it to sew pattern stitches on handmade cards. Albeit, I can’t decide which to get but the Costco pricing is very attractive. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Did you figure out how to download the fonts? I’ve found some on Etsy that I love that are in .pes format. I ordered my HE-240 yesterday and downloaded the manual, but I still can’t figure out if I’m going to need to purchase the expensive software for my computer, or if I can simply download the .pes files to my computer and then run the USB cord to my machine. So confusing. I’m a total newbie to the whole embroidery side of things. Thanks =)

  3. I just ordered my Brother HE 240 from Costco tonight. I’m thrilled to see how beautiful your first attempt turned out. Soooo excited!

    • Hi Dwayne, I’m afraid I can’t help you. I no longer have this machine, upgraded to the Janome MC350E. I would recommend contacting

      • Was there a problem with the machine? Or did you just want an upgrade?
I’m looking to buy the HE240.
