My First Dresden Plate

I had so much fun making my first Dresden plate this morning! When I went to the fabric store in Campbellford, I picked up Darlene Zimmerman’s template and this morning I watched the Missouri Star Quilt Co.’s tutorial on YouTube then picked out my fabrics and started cutting.

First thing I noticed was that it’s not easy cutting around the plastic template without shifting so I traced around each piece with a pencil. MSQC recommended chain sewing the tops which worked quite well. When sewing the blades together, I recommend either leaving long tails or back tacking so the stitches don’t come apart. After I had all my blades sewn together I hand sewed it to my background fabric and batting then quilted inside the blades. I also hand sewed the center circle and attempted a little hand sewing around the printed design. the final step on this plate was echoing the design, the first two rows are 1/4″  and the last is a little larger.

It’s not perfect but I love it and intend to make many more in the future. This block will be a pillow for our red leather sofa.

  • Hop Dot, Nicey Jane by Heather Bailey
